Volume 11, Issue 03: Can You Do It For A Day?

Building on my "Win the Day" theme for this year, let's consider how to really do that. One of the ways I am making this stick is reminding myself of it at different times in the day and constantly praying about it, so God would help me win the day, today.

Most of the time I am awake before my alarm goes off. When I hear it, I remind myself to win the day, starting with getting out of bed that very moment. When it's time to get ready to leave for my walk and workout, I remind myself to win the day right there, so that I make it back home on time to have a full hour of reading before my work day starts, my first reading opportunity of the day. When I am getting ready to eat, or when I am tempted to eat when I am not hungry or to continue eating after I have had my fill, I remind myself to win the day by eating right.

A house is built one day at a time. A career is advanced one day at a time. A relationship is built one day at a time. A strong, fit and healthy body is built one day at a time. It matters not what discipline you're trying to inculcate, what habit you're trying to build, or what goal you are going after. It always gets done one day at a time.

In his new book Win the Day: 7 Daily Habits to Help You Stress Less and Accomplish More, Mark Batterson writes that "no matter what habit you're trying to build, what problem you're trying to solve, or what goal you are going after, it always happens one day at a time. When you think it terms of weeks and months and years, it can be overwhelming and demotivating. Don't worry about next next, next month, or next year! Can you do it today? With God's help, I know you can."

So, can we do it today? With God's help, absolutely. We can get out of bed on time today. We can eat right today. We can exercise today. We can squeeze in more reading today. We can spend quality time with our significant others today. We can do today whatever it is that we need to do to get us to our desired ends.

Almost anybody can do something for just a day. We can look at each day as the only day we have to work on something. Before we know it, we will be living each day as if it's the only day we have left to live. We will be showing up as we truly want to, really playing our "A" game, being who we really are, people made for greatness.

Volume 11, Issue 02: Win The Day

As I consider going after my goals this year, I realize once again that the best bet in succeeding is setting out to win today....every day. Goal attainment isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. It is not something we end up with all of a sudden, it is something we work towards. We attain our dreams a day at a time, an action at a time.

If I want to start my days on time to go through each and every item on my calendar unhurried, without skipping some, then I have to get out of bed as soon as my body is awake today....every day, and go to bed on time tonight....every night. If I want to read at least 30 books this year, I need to break that down into a daily habit of reading for at least one hour today....every day.

If I want to loose belly fat and have a flat tummy by my next birthday, what holds the key to that becoming a reality is my daily habits with food. The best way to go about it is watch how I eat today....every day. Rather than counting on getting it right over time, I will consume a prudent diet today....every day. A prudent diet is correct food portions in the correct proportions taken at correct frequencies.

I am applying this principle across the board for all my intentions for 2021. I am setting out to win today....every day.

My goals are most likely very different from yours, but what we may have in common is a strong desire to go higher this year. We don't want to just look like we are playing our "A" game, we want to really play our "A" game this year in all spheres of our lives.

In order to attain your goals this year, how can you set out to win today.... every day? What small daily habits can you incorporate in your lifestyle to help you win the day? There are no overnight successes. Let's chip away at our goals today....every day, and we will most certainly have the future we want.

Volume 11, Issue 01: Left On The Table No More

What are you leaving on the table year in - year out? What has your lifestyle and your systems have you leaving on the table? What is it that you know you want but haven't had the stamina to rearrange your life to accommodate?

Just like the start of every day and every week and every month is an opportunity to turn our lives around, the start of every year is even a bigger opportunity to make bold decisions and start taking steps towards what we really want.

What don't I want to continue leaving on the table anymore? What could I have if I followed my calendar to the letter? What could I accomplish if I started every single day on time? What could I gain if I extended a hand of friendship to a distant friend?

What don't you want to continue leaving on the table anymore? Happiness, health and fitness, a spouse, kids, a thriving marriage, closeness to your growing children, real friendships, a house, time to enjoy the life you work so hard for?

What could you have if only you changed a few things in your life? What could you have if you switched jobs, moved houses, downsized your lifestyle, dropped wrong friends, saved before you spent, called and visited your family more often?

What could you have if you ditched the snooze button on your alarm and got out of bed the time you really need to wake up? What could you have if you changed your diet, walked up the stairs instead of using the elevator, went for a brisk walk instead of binge watching Netflix every evening? You can make a bold decision right now and start moving towards not leaving anything on the table anymore.

Volume 10, Issue 52: One Thing

As I was reflecting back on my 2020 journey this week, I found that going forward, I would do better focusing on just one thing - my calendar. On my year long hourly, daily, weekly and monthly google calendar that I have used for two years now - tweaking as needed, I have clearly set out what I am doing when, where, with who, and for how long. It is my goals' execution tool.

I figured if I just follow my calendar to the letter, everything I want to accomplish will be taken care of. I didn't do this very well this year and I want to fix that. I don't necessarily want to make new goals. Yes, I want to consider a new discipline or habit to embrace, a skill to learn, things I want to stop doing, a new thing to start doing and what to do differently. But my progress lies in mastering the things I have already laid out to be the signature of my life.

As you look back on how you have faired on your intentions for 2020, what is the one thing that you reckon if you diligently focused on, you would be better off? Sometimes all we need is to add one discipline or habit a year, rather than a long list of resolutions. I would rather master one or two things every year than struggle with a long list of things each year and be a master of none a decade down the road.

What's going to be your one thing to focus on in 2021? What's the one thing that's going to get you further ahead in becoming the best version of yourself? The version that is truly successful, authentic, healthy, balanced, wise, strong, resilient, thriving in work and relationships. Make your pick. It could be more than one, but the fewer the better. Then make a daily commitment to live it out. You will marvel at the transformation it will bring to your life by the end of the year.

Volume 10, Issue 51: No Need To Fuss

During hard times it's easy to be preoccupied with what's lacking, what's broken, what's missing. This year has been particularly difficult for many due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people lost livelihoods, some had to take pay cuts, downsize operations and so forth. As a result, a sense of anxiety and stress increased for many.

Even though we know that no amount of worrying can change a circumstance, most people invest a lot of energy in worry mode, stressed and unhappy. Difficult circumstances make it hard for us to be still and know that God will see us through each day, meet the needs that come with each day. But somehow, day in-day out we find something to eat, something to wear, a roof over our heads, a way to cope with the difficulties.

We must learn to relax during difficult times because God attends to us. Because we know God, we shouldn't be so preoccupied with getting what we want, so we can respond to God's giving. When we do, we find that all our daily needs are met without unnecessarily giving undue airtime to the difficulties at hand. God never fails to make a way for his people. He may not show up in the manner we want, but show up he does.

"If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.” Matthew‬ ‭6:30-33‬ ‭MSG‬‬.
