Volume 02, Issue 29: Polish Your Gifts

Each of us is talented in one way or another. But talent is not enough. To stand shoulders above the masses, we must sharpen our natural talent endowments to limits of outstanding excellence. It is when we do so that our gifts make room for us and bring us before great men.

A lighthouse does not go looking for ships. It is the ships that look for the lighthouse. As you shine your light, those who need your services will find you just like that.

You and your gift are like a lighthouse. The people having the needs that you offer a solution for will see your light and come to you. When you position yourself and sharpen your skills, you will naturally attract those who need your craft.

David was a talented harp player, a brave warrior, and a fine-looking young man with good judgment. As a boy, he would be out in the field looking after his father’s sheep, having his harp with him, taking time to practice his craft.

David did not go to King Saul to ask if he could be of service to him. The King’s men went out to look for him. He stood out because of his polished talent. His gift was just what the King needed at the time.

Your gift will make room for you and bring you before great men. Because of his gift, David was elevated from being a shepherd of a few sheep to serving before the King. King Saul was very pleased with David and promoted him. He became the King’s armor bearer, and was later appointed Commander of the King’s army.

Just the other week, my office sought the services of one of our local poets, Ms Caroline Nderitu, to perform at the launch of one of our programs at the Coast. She had never advertised herself to us, she probably had no idea that we existed. Her polished gift drew us to her, and the rest is history.

Don’t ignore your gifts. Devote yourself to learn all you can in the area of your brilliance and expertise. When you work on your craft, polish and hone it to perfection, the brighter it will shine and be seen much further by many people.

It is your gift that will move you from serving ordinary men, to serve before great men; men happy to pay you whatever you ask for it. It does not matter what you are good at. What matters is your discipline to exercise your God-given talent and strive to be the best at it by diligently working on it over and over again.

Volume 02, Issue 28: Service and Fulfillment Go Together

Service is not supposed to be something we dread. When we serve in the field of our passions, we look forward to serving.

Many people belong to the school of thought that service has to be a sacrifice; that you don’t have to love or enjoy what you do, just get it done. I believe there is a place for sacrificing for others, but we cannot sustain service that does not align with our self-interest.

We serve best in the area that brings us the most joy and satisfaction. Service fulfills when we match our strengths to the place of service.

God did not give us specific gifts just so we can ignore them and do whatever is thrown at us, or what seems lucrative. We should embrace our gifts and give our best service in the areas that we are best suited.

So many people hate their jobs. Tons of people spend their days doing what they loathe. However, work and service do not have to be dreadful chores that we have to endure. If only we aligned our strengths and passions with our preoccupations. We can choose to pursue careers that are in line with our interests and gifting.

Work and fun do not have to be mutually exclusive. We can blur the dividing line of work and pleasure by looking for opportunities to do what we do best every day. We can find pleasure in service.

Meet a need by serving where you are strongest. Your greatest contribution in life will come from your strength zone.

Volume 02, Issue 27: Serve Your Way to Greatness

As we search ourselves to understand our reason for being, we find something that we are passionate about, something that brings us great meaning. That is our seed of greatness, our contribution to humanity.

The pursuit of purpose is the pathway to greatness. Once you have discovered your purpose, your overarching passions, use them in the service of others. Therein lies your key to greatness.

Don’t push yourself to serve in the field that generates no passion for you. Greatness demands that we serve in the field of our passions. Our commitment to service must be intensely embedded in our self-interest. That is the only way to sustain it. We serve best in the area that brings us the most joy and exceeding meaning.

Opportunities abound to be of great service in the fields of our passions. When we serve in the area of our passions, our service becomes an act of love. We enjoy ourselves and obtain fulfillment while we meet the greatest needs of those we serve.

Volume 02, Issue 26: Explore Your Passions

Playing to our strengths is living on purpose. It is about doing what we love to do, what we can do well and accomplishing what is important to us. That may be more than one thing for each of us.

I was elated when I realized that we are not wired to love to do just one thing. Each of us may have one overreaching passion, but neatly tied to our overall purpose is a set of other passions. Don’t limit yourself to your first discovery. Explore your passions and find channels of expressing them in living out your purpose.

Your skill of applying your gift grows with learning and practice. Over time as we employ our gifts, the channels for their expression changes and expands, but our purpose remains the same. Allow yourself room for flexibility in the expression of your gift.

Choose to lead a fulfilling life, a life you love and feel great about. Embrace purpose-driven living. Pursue the positive desires of your heart while you work hard at developing your passions to transform them into finely polished competencies.
